Requirements for Campus Wireless Networks

This document clarifies technical details that relate to the UF Wireless Network Policy.

Network Services will continue to support the campus wireless system which uses the 'ufw' SSID. Departments that wish to participate in the central campus system may continue to do so. This will require that the department pay for the Access Point (AP) hardware, wiring installation, and network switches that may be necessary to provide connectivity to the AP(s). NS will provide ongoing support and maintenance these APs as part of the central system. Departments also have the option of deploying their own wireless systems but must do so under certain restrictions.

For APs managed by local departments the following restrictions apply:

  • The AP must use an SSID other than 'ufw' to clearly identify it as a separate network and to facilitate prompt support by the appropriate organization
  • The AP must not broadcast any SSID. This will require users who wish to access this network to specifically configure their client to use it. This is needed to prevent campus users from inadvertently associating with the wireless network while thinking that they are on the central campus system

  • Use of the AP must be authenticated either through use of a campus authentication VLAN provided by NS or through some other locally managed mechanism. If a locally managed authentication mechanism is used, it must meet the campus security requirements for authentication/accounting as outlined in the UF Information Technology Security Regulations
  • The AP must not use NAT/PAT translation (as this violates the campus security requirements)
  • The channel usage must be coordinated with NS to reduce interference
  • The AP location and setup parameters should be communicated to NS for documentation purposes
  • NS reserves the right to have the AP disabled if it disrupts the central campus system
